How to Turn On Saved Info and Personal Context in Gemini

Both settings live in the same place. Instructions for Gemini: what it holds

Instructions are the explicit layer, and they behave in the opposite way.

Per the instructions documentation, this is where you put custom directions that shape how Gemini responds across all chats — formatting preferences, tone, or a fact you want it to hold onto. You write them deliberately, and they stay until you remove them. The Privacy Hub confirms the retention rule: this data "remains saved until you choose to delete it."

Use this distinction when deciding what to save. Anything you want Gemini to always observe belongs in an instruction, because Memory makes no promise to retain any particular detail. Anything you simply want carried between chats is Memory's job.

Availability

Neither feature is available to every account, and the limits are specific.

Per the Gemini Apps Help Center, Memory requires you to be 18 or older and to use a personal Google Account; it is not available while signed in to a work, school, or supervised account. The instructions documentation sets the same personal-account requirement for Instructions for Gemini.

Availability also varies by app and conversation type. Removing an entry

Each layer must be deleted in its own place.

To remove what Memory has learned, go to Gemini Apps Activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and delete the relevant chats.
