Why Characters forget mid-conversation

A Character does not reread your entire history on every reply. Older messages get condensed, and details from far back can be lost.

The same passage gives the fix: "Anything you've written into Story Memory or pinned yourself is protected. It stays put no matter how full the bar gets." If a detail must not be lost — a name, a relationship, a turning point in the plot — pin the message or write it into Story Memory rather than trusting the chat log to carry it.

How to pin and unpin messages

Carrying memory into a new chat

Because Facts is a c.ai+ feature, this carry-over also requires c.ai+. On the free plan, the practical alternative is to start the new chat with a quick recap, then write the key details into that chat's Story Memory.

Does deleting a chat or a message delete the memory?

The creator guide notes that removing a message removes it from active conversation context. Character.AI's pages do not say what happens to Facts or Story Memory entries when an entire chat is deleted.
