Does Grok Remember Previous Conversations?

Published 2026-09-17 · Updated 2026-09-17

Yes. Grok saves details about you across chats, and you can inspect or change them yourself: open Settings to find the memory summary, where the Grok release notes explain you can "edit your saved memories" and "select text in your memory summary to correct or remove what Grok remembers." Grok does not document what happens to those memories when you delete the chat they came from, so it is best to treat the two as separate items to clean up.

This article covers what Grok retains, where each control lives, and where the official documentation stops. Every vendor fact below was checked against xAI's and X's own pages on 2026-09-17. Grok's memory controls have moved more than once since launch, so the labels on your screen may differ from older guides.

What Grok remembers, and from where

Grok can draw on three different sources, and they are controlled in three different places.

The first is memory from your past conversations. Grok announced this in April 2025 as a way to give more personalized recommendations and advice based on earlier chats, with the promise that you could see what it knew and choose what to forget (launch announcement on X; X may ask you to sign in to read it). The feature has been built out since. The release notes record memory update cards that "see what Grok remembers during conversations" (December 16, 2025), a memory management screen to "view, edit, and delete your memories" (December 22, 2025), editing from the memory summary in Settings (June 13, 2026), and correcting or removing a memory by selecting text in that summary (August 15, 2026).

The second is your conversation history, which is the list of past chats. A saved transcript differs from a memory: you can scroll back through a transcript yourself, whereas a memory is what Grok carries into a brand-new chat.

The third is your X account. As the Grok consumer FAQ explains, your experience "can be personalized if you allow your X data and interactions to be used for personalization." That covers your posts and activity on X, not things you tell Grok during a chat.

Before changing a setting, decide which of the three you want to adjust. Most confusion about Grok "still remembering" something comes from clearing one area and expecting the other two to follow automatically.

How to see and edit what Grok remembers

  1. Open Settings inside Grok.
  2. Find the memory summary, which the release notes describe as the place to edit your saved memories.
  3. If you want to fix or remove a single detail, select that text in the summary and correct or remove it.

During a chat, memory update cards show when Grok has picked something up, which is the quickest way to catch a detail you did not mean to share.

The 2025 launch posts described a different route — a book icon under a reply that listed the memories behind it, and a memory switch under Settings → Data Controls (launch thread on X). If a guide sends you looking for the book icon and you cannot find it, that is the older design. The release notes are the current record.

Does deleting a conversation delete the memory?

The official pages do not say. The consumer FAQ documents how to delete conversations, while the release notes show how to edit memories, but neither states that deleting a chat also removes what Grok learned from it. Until xAI documents that link, assume it does not happen automatically: delete the conversation, then open the memory summary and delete the detail there as well.

If you need to delete conversations, the consumer FAQ outlines these steps:

On grok.com

  1. Open the conversation history page.
  2. Select the trash button next to the conversation.
  3. If you want to delete everything, go to Settings and select the button next to the option for deleting all conversations.

In the mobile app

  1. Tap your profile picture to open your conversation history.
  2. Tap and hold the conversation's name, then select Delete Conversation.
  3. If you want to delete everything, go to Settings → Data Controls → Delete All Conversations.

Deletion is not instant on the server side. The same FAQ states that once you ask for data to be deleted, "it will take up to 30 days to delete from" the company's systems.

Personalization from your X account

This switch is completely separate. According to the consumer FAQ, on the mobile app it is Settings → Data Controls → Personalize Grok using X; on grok.com it is Settings → Data → Personalize Grok using X. Keep in mind the two surfaces use different menu names: Data Controls on mobile, Data on the web.

If you use Grok inside X rather than in the Grok app, the control lives in X's own settings: Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators, followed by the option to allow X to personalize your experience with Grok, per the X Help Center.

Private Chat

Grok offers a temporary mode called Private Chat, started from the ghost-shaped icon at the top right of the screen. The consumer FAQ says that in Private Chat "your conversation history will not be viewable to you and will be deleted" from company systems within 30 days, and that Private Chat content is not used for model training.

The FAQ does not say whether a Private Chat can still read the memories Grok already holds about you. It is documented as a way to keep a conversation out of your history and out of training, not as a way to talk to a Grok that knows nothing about you. If you need the second, clear the memory summary first.

Memory and model training are different settings

Whether Grok remembers you and whether your chats help train xAI's models are separate questions with separate controls. Training is governed by Improve the model, found under Settings → Data Controls on mobile and Settings → Data on grok.com, per the consumer FAQ. Turning it off applies to new conversations. It does not erase memories, and erasing memories does not opt you out of training.

Why Grok still forgets things mid-conversation

A memory feature does not make a long conversation lossless. Within a single chat, a model works from a limited window of recent text; once a thread runs long enough, early details fall out of that window even though the transcript is still on your screen. Because saved memories are short summaries rather than a full replay of everything you said, they will not rescue a specific figure or name from forty messages ago.

If a detail matters, restate it in the message where you need it. A short, dated note you paste in is easier to check and correct than anything a memory feature infers.

FAQ

Does Grok remember previous conversations? Yes. It keeps memories across chats, which you can view and edit from the memory summary in Settings, per the release notes.

How do I make Grok forget something? Open the memory summary in Settings, select the text you want gone, and remove it. Then delete the conversation it came from if you also want the transcript gone.

Does Private Chat turn memory off? It keeps that conversation out of your history and out of training. The consumer FAQ does not say it stops Grok from using existing memories.

Is Grok's memory different on free and paid plans? The official pages reviewed for this article do not publish a plan-by-plan breakdown of memory.
